Communication Improvement Project

Assignment 2

Purpose:

To research and write an annotated bibliography. TOPIC: How management can avoid misunderstandings and conflicts through planning and clarity of communication.

Submit:

1.     Minimum 5 sources – use a combination of sources. Sources such as Wikipedia are not appropriate for this assignment. Do not use them as one of your 5 sources. Use the resources available to you through the SPC library. Look for credible sources that are peer reviewed or reviewed by an editor or editorial board. Points will be deducted for sources that do not meet the aforementioned requirements.

2.    Use APA format –See Purdue OWL for annotated bibliography information (see below) and look at the student examples that I have provided in the folder.  Points will be deducted for submissions that do not follow this format.

3.    Read the sources and write a seven sentence summary about each one. Include how helpful you think the source will be for your improvement plan. Do not copy the Abstract from the source and submit it as your own work (this is plagiarism). Paraphrase the source – using your own words to explain the ideas or concepts.

4.    Include an introductory paragraph (7 sentences minimum) and a concluding paragraph (7 sentences minimum) for the overall bibliography.

EXAMPLE: this example use MLA – my assignment use APA:

Source one

Baird, L. (1983). Career Dynamics: Managing the Superior/Subordinate Relationship. Organizational Dynamics, 11(4), 46-64.

I think that this article will be very helpful to this project. It is broken up into different sections that each describes different aspects of the superior-subordinate relationship. There are, “what a subordinate needs from a boss” and “what a boss needs from a subordinate” sections which I enjoyed reading. I think it is important to remember that this is a two way relationship with both parties needing something. It also gives outlines of how to better communicate and build stronger relationships. It also talks about the life and stages of a career and how needs will change over the course of time.

Assignment Two

The obstacle that I have to overcome pertaining to organizational communication is improving my superior-subordinate communication. After doing more research I feel like my assignment topic should also include superior-subordinate relationships. I am finding that good communication is based a lot on the level or type of relationship one has with the other person.

I found some articles that are actually based on studies that were done on different groups of people. I always find information like that interesting to read. Obviously findings will not necessarily be correct when applied across that board but the information is very helpful.
