John Snow impacted the future of public health with his theory on cholera because he debunked the theory that cholera was due to bad air from sewers, graves, garbage pits, and poisonous gases and proved that it was transmitted through the water. The disease had already killed hundreds of thousands of people. The severe gastro symptoms caused the sufferers to die of dehydration because the effects of the disease were so severe on the intestinal tract. Snow did testing on animals and surgery patients and made the use of drugs safer. When patients complained of stomach issues as first symptom from disease when he started to track the disease in 1848 when another outbreak erupted. He tracked the source of the stomach issues to bad food because if it were from bad air the symptoms would have shown up first affecting the lungs. He then theorized that the diarrhea was the culprit. Just a few drops of the infectious fluid spread to a water supply would kill countless victims. Snow’s theory saved millions of lives by discovering that diseases can be transmitted through contaminated fluids. This impacted public health because it saved the lives of millions of people and the future state of thinking. People no longer thought diseases were spread strictly through bad air.
